Manipulation tactics (so they don’t work on you)

Some salespeople don’t help you decide: they pressure you so you don’t think. Knowing their tricks helps in two ways: they won’t work on you and you’ll never use them.

Fake urgency“Today only”, “2 left”, countdowns that restart. Falsely claiming something will only be available for a very short time is a misleading practice banned in the EU.
Forced reciprocityThey give you something small (a coffee, a “free audit”) so you feel in debt and buy.
“Everyone’s buying it”Social pressure. Others buying it doesn’t mean it’s good for you.
The inflated anchor price“Was €999, now €199” when it never cost €999.
Foot in the doorFirst they ask for a small “yes”, then a bigger one, so it’s harder to say no.
Not letting you think“If you walk out that door, the price changes.” A good deal is still good tomorrow.

How to protect yourself

  • When rushed, take your time: “I’ll think about it and let you know tomorrow.”
  • Always ask for the total price, everything included.
  • If they make you feel guilty for not buying, that’s a sign to leave.
In Spain, aggressive and misleading commercial practices towards consumers are banned by law. Besides being ugly, they can bring you fines and complaints.
