Dopamine: what it really is

On TikTok you’ve heard the word dopamine a thousand times: “your dopamine is fried”, “do a dopamine detox”… Let’s see what it really is, because almost everything people say is oversimplified or wrong.

It isn’t the “pleasure molecule”

Dopamine is a brain messenger that has a lot to do with wanting: seeking something, anticipating it and learning what gives you a reward. It isn’t exactly what makes you enjoy things. In animal experiments, when dopamine was blocked, they still enjoyed food if it was given to them, but they stopped moving to get it.

Put simply: dopamine isn’t pleasure, it’s “I want more”. That’s why you can scroll for two hours without having a good time: you don’t do it because you’re enjoying it, you do it because your brain is waiting for the next good video.

Why your phone is so addictive

1A triggerA notification, boredom, the phone on the table.
2The wantingYour brain anticipates: “maybe something good will come up”.
3The actionYou unlock and swipe.
4A reward, sometimesOne amazing video… among twenty ordinary ones.

That unpredictable reward is the same idea as a slot machine: because you don’t know when the prize will come, you keep pulling. Apps with infinite scroll exploit exactly that. It’s not that you’re weak: it’s designed that way.

The “dopamine detox”: good idea, bad name

  • You can’t “empty” or “reset” your dopamine in a weekend: your brain needs it to move, learn and live.
  • What does work is the idea behind it: removing the triggers that set off the habit (notifications, phone on the table, apps on your home screen) and adding friction (logging out, setting limits).

What really helps

  • Sleeping well: with little sleep everything is harder and you look for quick rewards.
  • Phone out of sight while you work or study.
  • Start the day doing, not consuming: the first thing you do shapes the rest.
  • Being a bit bored: boredom is what pushes you to create something.
