What scaling a business means

Growing is selling more. Scaling is selling more without your hours and costs growing at the same rate. If you have to work twice as much to earn twice as much, you’re not scaling: you’re just working more.

Growing without scalingA barber who cuts more hair. More customers = more of his hours. There’s a ceiling: the hours in the day.
ScalingThe same barber who hires two barbers, sets up a booking system and sells his own products. He earns more without cutting more.

Before scaling, three questions

  • Do I make money on every sale? If you lose a bit on each customer, scaling is losing faster.
  • Do customers come back or recommend me? That shows the product is good.
  • Can it run without me doing everything? If everything depends on you, sort that out first.
