Earnings and dividends
Quarterly results
Every 3 months companies publish how much they’ve sold and earned. The market compares those numbers with what analysts expected:
- Better than expected → the share usually rises.
- Worse than expected → it usually falls, sometimes 10-20 % in a day.
- The company’s guidance for the coming months also matters a lot.
Dividends
Ex-dividend dateIf you buy on that day or later, you don’t get that dividend. On that day the share drops by roughly what it pays.
Payment dateWhen the money reaches you.
WithholdingIn Spain 19 % is withheld. For US shares, 15 % there (with the W-8BEN form), which you can partly recover on your tax return.
In Stocks → Calendar you’ll see the key economic events that move the market: interest rates, inflation, jobs…
